A Brief History of Filipino Food

Filipino food is said to be influenced by a number of different ethnicities such as Chinese, indigenous and African. Filipino foods also include dishes that are from Central and South America. The Philippines is an island nation in Southeast Asia. Its people are mostly Christian and its culture combines the influence of many other ethnicities. Some examples of traditional Filipino dishes include the popular Samoan and Western-influenced Moro cuisines.

A typical Filipino meal usually consists of a full plate consisting of vegetables, proteins, carbohydrates and salt or seasoning. This kind of food is low in fats, carbohydrates and sodium. Unlike most countries, the components used for making Filipino food are mostly fruits and vegetables, beans, meat and rice. Most restaurants prepare Filipino dishes using fresh ingredients and spices. The major contributor to the popularity of Filipino cuisine is the Philippines’ rich soil and the abundance of fertile lands in the country.

Although Chinese influence has largely affected the flavor of Filipino food, there are also notable changes in Filipino cooking. In the past decades, the popularity of Filipino foods has grown tremendously especially in places frequented by Chinese and Spanish tourists. Nowadays, you can find virtually every restaurant and hotel in major cities to prepare delicious Filipino dishes. The surge in tourism and the worsening of the global economic crisis are the major reasons why the popularity of Filipino dishes are seeing a tremendous rise.
